CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Canopy Housing Foundation, the charitable-arm of Canopy Realtor® Association, is pleased to announce that five Haywood County nonprofits that were recently awarded Community Grants will receive additional funding through the NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation matching grants program.

NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation’s grant program recognizes area organizations that have received support from their local Realtor® association and who, in turn, have applied to the state for matching funds. The total amount awarded in funding was $4,000, which is the maximum that can be awarded to any one Realtor® association during one fiscal year.

Michael McKinney, Executive Director of NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation, said, “Since 2004, the NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation has awarded matching grants to qualifying housing nonprofits that partner with local Realtor® associations in their community. We are pleased to deepen the commitment of the Canopy Realtor® Association involvement with this donation.”

Canopy Housing Foundation will distribute the $4,000 in additional funds equally to the following organizations:

  1. The EACH Initiative, Inc. (Ending Area Child Homelessness)
  2. Haywood Pathways Center
  3. Mountain Projects
  4. The Arc of Haywood County, Inc.
  5. Haywood Habitat for Humanity

At the inaugural virtual Western Region Community Grants Celebration in September, Canopy Housing Foundation distributed $14,200 in Community Grants and $3,000 in Habitat Support Grants to organizations addressing unmet housing needs throughout Haywood County. The Foundation also awarded two educational scholarships to graduating seniors totaling $1,500.

Brian Cagle, Canopy Housing Foundation Western Region Chair, commented, “We are excited to see the ways that these funds are being leveraged to the benefit of our community. And we are equally excited to see the ways that the Realtor® community, even on the state level, continues to address and invest in the many housing needs across our county.”

Canopy Housing Foundation’s Community Grants and Habitat Grants program originated in 2009 and traditionally has been open to nonprofit organizations in Mecklenburg and Iredell counties that are working to address housing issues. To date the program has distributed $586,749.70 in Community and Habitat support grants. With the merger between Canopy Realtor® Association and the Haywood Realtor® Association in January 2020, both programs have been extended to support nonprofit organizations and the Habitat for Humanity program in Haywood County. Each grantee must be supported by a letter of recommendation from an active Realtor®. Applications for grant consideration and are rated according to community impact, project feasibility, fiscal strength and Realtor® support. Funds are restricted and must be used by December 31, 2020. Funds cannot be used for capital costs, staff/administrative expenses or debt reduction.
