What?
Realtors® Care Day is a community-wide, home-repair project in April that assists homeowners with exterior home repairs, and provides adaptive and safety modifications for the elderly and disabled. It is an initiative of the Charlotte Regional Realtor® Association Housing Opportunity Foundation. The 2012 Realtors® Care Day is April 20.
Why?
Faced with economic challenges not seen in at least a generation, many over-extended homeowners are forced to choose between paying their mortgage payment or performing basic repairs. While it is impossible to help everyone, we can make a significant impact on our community’s elderly and disabled, and others living in unsafe or substandard conditions. Realtors® are the helping hands that these homeowners desperately need. Since 2009, more than 600 volunteers come together each year and help repair homes in our community. In the three years of the project, 87 homeowners have received much-needed repairs, and the project has made a total financial impact that exceeds $400,000.
Where?
Home repairs take place all day in Mecklenburg and Iredell counties.
Who will participate?
More than 600 members of the association volunteer each year for the project. While volunteer opportunities are limited to Realtors®, the magnitude of this project requires professional assistance from builders, developers and other professionals, such as painters, roofers and home inspectors. Each participating homeowner and his or her family also participate in the day’s activities as they are able.
Who are we helping?
The foundation collaborates with community housing advocates and nonprofits to identify homeowners who are in need and meet the criteria for support. The foundation works with the City of Charlotte’s Neighborhood and Business Services Department, Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte, Habitat for Humanity of Iredell County, Habitat for Humanity of Matthews, Our Towns Habitat for Humanity, Love INC and the Davidson Housing Coalition’s HAMMERS program.
How you can help
Realtors® can volunteer online now through April 1. Once you sign up to volunteer, you will be kept informed through e-blasts that provide updates, including confirmation of your work assignment by early-to mid-April. All volunteers must be Realtors® and members of the association.
