What?
Realtors® Care Day is a community-wide, home-repair project on Friday, April 23 that will assist homeowners with exterior home repairs, and provide adaptive and safety modifications for the elderly and disabled. It is an initiative of the Charlotte Regional Realtor® Association Housing Opportunity Foundation.
Why?
Faced with economic challenges not seen in at least a generation, many over-extended homeowners are forced to choose between paying their mortgage payment or performing basic repairs. While it is impossible to help everyone, we can make a significant impact on our community’s elderly and disabled, and others living in unsafe or substandard conditions. Realtors® will be the helping hands that these homeowners desperately need. In 2009, more than 600 volunteers came together and helped 33 homeowners, making a total financial impact that exceeded $250,000.
Where?
Home repairs will take place all day in Mecklenburg and Iredell counties. At the end of the work day, all volunteers, sponsors and homeowners will gather to celebrate the day’s achievements at a come-as-you-are celebration party.
Who will participate?
More than 600 members of the association are expected to volunteer for the day. While volunteer opportunities are limited to Realtors®, the magnitude of this project will require professional assistance from builders, developers and other professionals, such as painters, roofers and home inspectors. Each participating homeowner and his or her family will also participate in the day’s activities as they are able.
Who are we helping?
The foundation is collaborating with community housing advocates and nonprofits to identify homeowners who are in need and meet the criteria for support. The foundation is working with the City of Charlotte’s Neighborhood and Business Services Department, Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte, Habitat for Humanity of Iredell County, Habitat for Humanity of Matthews, Our Towns Habitat for Humanity, Love INC and the Davidson Housing Coalition’s HAMMERS program.
How you can help
Sign up to volunteer as an individual or as a team. All volunteers will be kept informed through e-blasts that provide updates, including confirmation of your work assignment by early-to mid-April. All volunteers must be Realtors® and members of the association. The deadline to sign up is Thursday, April 1.
