Maintaining Your License

What must I do to maintain my provisional broker license?

All new provisional brokers licensed on or after April 1, 2006 must complete 90 hours of post-licensing education within three years of the date of licensure. The post-licensing education is divided into the following three 30-hour post-licensing courses: Broker Relationships and Responsibilities, Contracts and Closing, and Selected Topics.

How long do I have to complete the post-licensing education requirements?

Provisional brokers must complete at least one of the three courses during each of the first three one-year periods following the date of the initial licensure and all three courses within three years of initial licensure. A provisional broker can elect to complete all three courses during the first or second year after initial licensure.

What happens to my license after I complete all the post-licensing education?

After completing all three post-licensing courses, the provisional status of the broker license will be terminated by NCREC.

What happens to my license if I do not complete the post-licensing requirements?

If a provisional broker fails to complete a post-licensing course by the end of either the first or second year after initial licensure, his or her license will be placed on inactive status until he or she remedies the education deficiency and requests reactivation of his or her license. If a provisional broker fails to complete all three post-licensing courses by the end of the third year after initial licensure, his or her license will be cancelled.

What else must I do to maintain my license?

Your real estate license must be renewed annually by July 1. At the second renewal, the licensee must take eight hours of approved Continuing Education (CE) in order to renew the license on active status. CE courses are offered July 1-June 10 each licensing year.

What happens if I don’t take continuing education (CE)?

Failure to obtain eight CE hours per license period (July 1-June 10) will result in a renewed license being placed on inactive status. The licensee cannot do anything that requires a real estate license while on inactive status. Procedures for reinstating and re-activating the license are available from NCREC. Any deficiencies in CE hours must be corrected before the inactive license can be activated. The number of CE hours required will vary according to each licensee's situation. You should consult NCREC staff for accurate information on reinstatement of an inactive license.
